Motorcycle rider struck by Lightning

Just saw this on the ST forum;

Motorcyclist hit by lightning, crashes and dies

240510
Authorities in Florida say lightning struck a motorcyclist on a Florida interstate, causing a crash and his death.

The Florida Highway Patrol tells news outlets the lightning strike hit the driver Sunday afternoon as he rode southbound on Interstate 95, cracking the 45-year-old's now-burning helmet and sending him off the roadway.

He was pronounced dead at the scene in east-central Florida. Florida troopers say an off-duty Virginia state trooper witnessed the lightning strike and its aftermath.

WOGX-TV says authorities confirmed the motorcyclist is a 45-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina. His identity wasn't immediately released

As I mentioned over on the Burgman forum...
Since the chance of getting hit by lightning is so much less than the chance of winning the lottery... well, I haven't won the lottery yet and won't likely in this lifetime.
Also, there is almost as much a chance of being hit on the bike as there is staying at home watching the storm out the window. I'd rather be riding and be hit than sitting at home watching and be hit.
Lightning can strike many miles away from where the storm is there are some areas where there would be no riding being done most of the time due to storms nearby.
I think I'll ride... and go buy a lottery ticket.

I was struck by lightning in 2011 standing outside my GF's apartmen, it sucks. Also buying a lottery ticket afterwards did nothing but lighten my wallet slightly.

The moral of the story is "go ahead and ride - and don't bother with lottery tickets"

Gotta admit this story shook me a little, not because I'm worried that it might happen to me, but because of the sheer awful luck of it. I was riding in Ohio a couple of summers ago and a bolt struck the ground off to the left of me while I was playing Frogger with the crazy interstate traffic. Aside from being momentarily blinded at 75 miles per hour, I was surprised at the volume of the hit and also by the fact that I could actually feel the force of it through my footpegs. It was the second-most startling event on my cross-country trip.

That would be the HPE (High Pucker Event) that happened in California when a big white van came to a screeching stop in front of me and I almost got accordion-ed between it and the car behind me. I JUST BARELY whizzed by the van on the left side and almost decapitated myself on his extended side mirror. Probably the closest call Iíve ever had and it left me nauseous for awhile afterwards. Situation was completely my fault; I was following too close and was distracted by the palm trees. Also, everyone including me was traveling too fast.
