Front Tire

Anyone use a 120/70 18 front tire on their CTX1300? I'm looking down the road at a set of Shinko 011 Verge tires. Shinko has the 200/50 17 for the rear. But the front comes in a 120/70 18.

My dealer has not recommend this brand of tires due to poor tread life. They are inexpensive tires and you get what you pay for them. Changing from a 130 to a 120 width front tire will probably cause it to turn in quicker, you also need to check the load and speed rating on the tire as well. It’s more narrow width might have less Corning traction due to a smaller contact patch. Also make sure that width is comparable with the rim width of the CTX. It costs real dollars to change a tire, unless you do it yourself and I leave this to the dealer so I want the best handling and wearing tire I can buy so I don’t have to change them as often. Scrimping on your Tire’s is not a good place to save money. Your Tire’s are the only thing between you and the road and is a major safety issue.

No need to stay with exactly the same model for front and rear. I went with a different model front when I tried Shinko tires on mine. They matched and worked together very well. Though they didn't have a long life IMO but they did cost less.

stay away from Shinko, poor tread wear and tire seperation issue, typically you find them on scooters

I have had complete opposite experience. Great tire, great price, great performance... wet or dry. And I ride 9K-10K miles a year!

They are Yokohama tires, not scooter tires. Yokohoma Japan decided to get out of motorcycle produuction and sold factory to Shinko Korea. These tires perform better than Pirelli's.

Shinko has several different tire compounds for the CTX. Make sure you get the right one for your type of riding.

I'm glad they have worked out for you, unfortunately I can not say I have had the same luck.

This thread is where I stated what Shinko tires I used. They were great performers, possibly better than any other tire I've used on any bike. BUT, they didn't last long enough for me. The cost is less than other tires but the lower price is not consistent with buying 2 sets of these to every one of another brand. Keep the psi higher on the front or you'll end up with cupping on that tire. When I saw some cupping starting to develop I bumped the psi to 42 on the front and the cupping all but disappeared. Replaced these at over 8400 miles. Then went with Exedra Max tires that lasted just over 9000 miles. Then I went with Avon tires that were lasting much better than either of those and really only cost maybe 20-25% more when I bought them but were looking to last 75% longer. Performance of the Avon tires was close to the Shinko tires.

For the Front I use Shinko SE890 Journey Touring Radial 130/70 x 18
For the rear I use Shinko 016 Verge 2x 200/50 x 17.
Although Shinko 005 Advance tires (front and back) are excellent tires, I find the rear treads wears out faster than the Verge.
