Clutch fluid flush - bleed valve

4712 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  CACTX1300DLX
Good morning,

I want to change the clutch & brake fluid on the this bike. Where is the bleed valve (slave cylinder) located for the clutch system, and how is it properly accessed? In advance, please excuse my amateur questions on this subject.

From what I have read, this bike uses DOT 4 brake fluid for the brake system and in the clutch system; is this correct? Any recommendations on a specific brand?

In advance, I :ty: for the assistance.

I didn't replaced the clutch fluid yet so I'm just reading the service manual: there is a bleed valve at the clutch slave cylinder.

Slave cylinder is on the rear crankcase cover. In the general area of the oil filter.

I used Prestones DOT4 synthetic for both the brake and clutch system. The bleed valve is behind the black rear cover on the left behind the cylinder. This is also the cover for the radiator over flow tank site gage. Just pull out from bottom and then pull up. You will have to disconnect a wire connector to fully remove. I just pushed it out of the way while I blead the system. I used a vacuum bleeder for both the clutch and brake system. I would suggest you purchase a shop manual before bleeding the brakes. There is a stepped procedure.

Just a little add. I put my side stand on a 2x4 and turned the handlebars to the right to level the clutch reservoir. This changes the center of gravity. Almost pushed the bike over.
Almost easier to pull the seat and valve cover if you need to add coolant.
Put the hose in a bottle with old dot4 and just pump the clutch.

You can see by the photo the bleed valve is not at the slave cylinder, it's by the coolant overflow bottle. Remove the black plastic cover to access. You'll find two plastic pins under the edge of the seat. The rest is friction clips in rubber grommets. Just pull gently.

Yes our bikes use DOT 4 brake fluid for both the clutch and brake. If your bike is a deluxe with ABS there is a correct procedure on the bleed sequence. I ended up purchasing a air powered vacuum bleeder, self filling brake fluid bottle that secures itself to the edge of the master cylinders. Makes flushing the brake and clutch fluid an easy 1 person job. I did rig up something to hold up the rear brake reservoir to hold it and the self filling device level during the process.
