This is the blurb that Honda has wrote about the CTX 1300's 1261cc V-4 engine.

Nothing sounds like a V-4 engine, and nothing feels like one either. Longitudinal engine mounting improves power transfer and drivetrain efficiency, two engine counterbalancers eliminate vibration for super-smooth running, and its specially tuned 1261 cc engine offers plenty of power for long-distance touring.
Sounds good to me. Anybody have any complaints about the engine offering?

No complaints here! I had a ST1300, and that motor in that configuration was just sweetness.

i had an ST 13 for 5 years...sellers remorse;
I had mixed emotions. Loved how the bike rode once it was moving, loved the motor, loved the handling. But with the seat height and high center of gravity, I had a hard time hoofing it around driveways and parking lots. And the riding position just didn't agree with me for anything longer than a couple of hours. I went on a 5-day trip from RI to Ohio and back, and I lived on Advil the last 4 days of it. Even with the adjustable seat, I couldn't find a comfortable riding position. But damm could that thing carve up the twisties like nobody's business.

And it was kinda cool how it sounded like a space ship ... until you really hammered it. :D

I've on my 2nd st1300 and have had one in the garage since they first came out in 2003. Most motors have some shortcomings, but overall this is my favorite motor of all time and I've owned a lot of bikes over the last 43 years. It is a wonderful balance of torque(both at the bottom and top of the rev range), horsepower and it is very smooth throughout. It is also bulletproof with riders I have heard that have over 200,000 miles on the st1300s and still going strong.

Had an 05 ST 1300 until a crash. Replaced it with a low mileage 07. Smooth running powerful engines. I've ridden an ST in 44 of the lower 48 states and 3 Canaccian provinces since 05.

There's a nice cutaway of the ST1300 motor here: Honda ST1300 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Thanks for that. Now I'd like to see it side by side with a cut-away of your typical V-twin, and I think that will quickly answer the question of why the former is so much more expensive -- and less plentiful -- than the latter.

But damm that's a beautiful bit of engineering. And I'm just ecstatic that it's finally finding its way into something resembling a cruiser. :)
